Controlled Substances and Schedule Classifications.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The primary objectives of this training module are to:

1. Understand the role of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in regulating medicines and poisons in Australia.

2. Explain the significance of the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons (SUSMP) in categorizing substances based on their risk and safety.

3. Identify the different schedules of substances as defined by the SUSMP, from Schedule 1 to Schedule 9.

4. Recognize the importance of the scheduling system in managing the availability and administration of therapeutic goods, contributing to public health and safety.

5. Discuss how the TGA updates the schedules in response to new research and societal needs, balancing access to medicines with public protection.
